Prof. Georgios Papaioannou is Professor of Museology / Museum Studies with a specialization in Digital Cultural Heritage and the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums). He has an extensive interdisciplinary background that spans archaeology, cultural heritage, classics, and information technology, and he has authored over 300 research publications and invited lectures across these domains. He studied in Greece (BA, University of Ioannina), the United Kingdom (MA, University College London; PhD, King’s College London), and Spain (University of La Laguna), and has undertaken further academic training in the United States (Harvard University, Columbia University) and the UK (UCL, CILIP). Professor Papaioannou has directed more than 40 internationally funded research projects focused on cultural and museum-related initiatives across the Mediterranean and the Arab world, including Greece, Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. He is the founder and convener of the International Conferences on Museum Big Data (MBD), having organized MBD2019 in Qatar, MBD2020 in Cyprus, MBD2024 in Greece, and the forthcoming MBD2026 in Brazil.

With over 30 years of experience in archaeological excavation and heritage dissemination, he has played a central role in designing and implementing museums and exhibitions throughout the Arab world and beyond. Notable examples include the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth in the Dead Sea (Jordan), the Ras al-Hadd Experience (Oman), and the Corfu Prisons Museum (Greece). Professor Papaioannou has taught extensively for more than two decades at universities in Greece, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France, Cyprus, Jordan, and Qatar, and has received multiple awards for teaching excellence. He has also developed and delivered Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes for professionals in libraries, archives, and museums throughout the Mediterranean and the Arab world. His academic affiliations include membership in the EUROPEANA Network Association, the Pool of Experts of the European Museum Academy, and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). He serves as Director of the Museology Research Laboratory at the Ionian University in Greece and as Secretary General of the Hellenic Studies Society of the Near East (HSNES). He is also a Senior Fellow and Assessor of the UK’s Higher Education Academy.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Papaioannou is a committed endurance athlete. He is an active marathon runner and a triathlon competitor, and an IronMan finisher. His athletic pursuits reflect a personal ethos of discipline, resilience, and long-term commitment—values that inform both his scholarly and public-facing work.

He has a strong background in educational theory and pedagogy, with particular expertise in higher education curriculum design and in bridging the transition from secondary to tertiary education. He is fluent in Greek, English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic.
