The Laboratory of Digital Libraries and Electronic Publishing provides high-level education and promotes research by complementing the Department’s teaching and research activities. It participates in European and national research projects concerning digital information and its distribution systems, which it carries out using both its staff and external collaborators –usually Department alumni. It is also in close co-operation with numerous scientific and cultural agencies and its priority is the efficiency of said agencies’ information digitisation, digital organisation and distribution, based on international practice, so as to improve the National digital content of Greece. Through these activities, our students are provided with the opportunity to acquire unique experiences, useful for their training and their future career as professionals. The Laboratory deals with current issues concerning information organisation, distribution and related technologies. More specifically, it includes digital information management, interoperability and evaluation of systems supporting the management and distribution of information and knowledge, as well as the individualised access to sources of information, services and Web 2.0.
Aiming at playing an active role in both the national and international scientific community, the Laboratory attempts to organise information in an efficient way and to distribute it using state-of-the-art means:
- It studies and tests models, protocols, technologies and their applications, aiming at developing integrated and interconnected information gateways
- It participates in the international research and standardisation endeavours in its field, representing our country and expressing the particularities of our language
- It offers requirement description, planning and development services for integrated solutions, based on international standards and the principle of interoperability.
