Short Description:

This course introduces the main concepts and methodologies for the development of Information Systems. The course presents the main principles of the Systems Theory and the main characteristics of data and information. Moreover it presents the information systems life-cycle along with the structured systems analysis and design method phases and steps. Special focus is given on the Data Flow Diagram, the Structure Diagram and the Entity Relationship Model. Moreover the object-oriented approach is presented along with the UML diagrams.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The aim of the course is to acquire students an in-depth knowledge of the main concepts of the Systems Theory and the principles of Information systems. Additionally the objective of the course is to provide knowledge regarding the information development methodologies, such as the Structured Systems Analysis and Design method and the object-oriented systems analysis and design approach along with the main diagrammatic techniques of UML.

Week #1: Data and Information. Data acquisition methods.

Week #2: Information Systems: definitions and characteristics.

Week #3: Information Systems and Organizations. Information systems typology and technologies.

Week #4: Introduction to Systems Theory.

Week #5: Hard and Soft systems, definitions and differences.

Week #6: Information Systems life-cycle. The Structured Systems Analysis and Design approach.

Week #7: The Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method (SSADM).

Week #8: Data Flow Diagrams.

Week #9: Data Flow Diagrams, Structure Diagrams.

Week #10: Data Flow Diagrams, Structure Diagrams.

Week #11: Object – Oriented Systems Analysis and Design – Introduction to UML.

Week #12: Object – Oriented Systems Analysis and Design – Introduction to UML.

Week #13: Information Systems in Libraries, Archives and Museums.
