Western Sovereignty archives Description: Overview of the situation that prevailed in Greece after the Fourth Crusade and brief reference to Western sovereignty. The fate of the archives of early these Sovereignties. The State Archives of Venice as a research resource. With emphasis on documents pertaining to Greece under Venetian Rule. Institutional and administrative organization of Greece under Venetian Rule. Archive creation and document typology. The Duke of Crete Archives. The Archives of the three islands Proveditor General. Palaeographic and diplomatic analysis of public and private documents. Archival source publications. The archives of French domination in the Ionian Islands /Republican French (1797-1798). The archives of Russo-Turkish domination in the Ionian Islands Brief reference to the period of sovereignty (1798-1800) and the Ionian State (1800-1807) in the Ionian Islands. The Archives of Second French domination in the Ionian Islands/Imperial French (1807-1809). The Archives of British “Protection” (1816-1864).
By successfully completing the course the student will be able to realize about the State Archives of Venice as a research resource and the importance, the preservation and the evaluation of these Archives and their document’s typology. He will also be able to know about the archives of French domination in the Ionian Islands, the archives of Russo-Turkish domination in the Ionian Islands, the Archives of Second French domination in the Ionian Islands and the Archives of British “Protection” in the Ionian Islands.
Week #1: Overview of the situation that prevailed in Greece after the Fourth Crusade and brief reference to Western Sovereignty derived. The fate of the archives of early these Sovereignties..
Week #2: Archives of the Serene Republic of Venice and the Greek regions under Venetian Sovereignty from the 13th to the 18th century/1797.
Week #3: Venetian State Institutions .
Week #4: Creation of Archives. The State Archives of Venice as a research source.
Week #5: Venetian administrations archives located in the General State archives, with emphasis in the archives of the Ionian Islands.
Week #6: archival sources and finding aids for the above period.
Week #7: The archives of French domination in the Ionian Islands /Republican French (1797-1798).
Week #8: The archives of Russo-Turkish domination in the Ionian Islands Brief reference to the period of sovereignty (1798-1800) and the Ionian State (1800-1807) in the Ionian Islands.
Week #9: The Archives of Second French domination in the Ionian Islands/Imperial French (1807-1809).
Week #10: The Archives of British “Protection” (1816-1864).
Week #11: Special reference to the Ionian State Archives.
Week #12: 12th week: Presentation (with multimedia) of public and private archival institutions in Greece and abroad (Italy, France, Britain, etc.).
Week #13: Practical exercises and a general revision. Discussion with students.
