Short Description:

The renaissance of the (new) Hellenism, the Greek Revolution (1821-1828) and the role of the Great Powers in the creation of the Greek State (1830) are examined through archival evidence. The creation, climax and end of the "Great Idea" (1922). Important milestones of this course are the great Greek politicians Charilaos Trikoupis and Eleftherios Venizelos. The period of the Balkan Wars, the Asia Minor Campaign and Destruction, the establishment of the Metaxic regime, as well as the period of the Second World War and the Greek Civil War, are also being examined. The "Cyprus issue": from the "colonization" of the island to the founding of the pseudo-state in the occupied northern territories. Post-war Greece.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Basic knowledge and culture of the scientific judgment, necessary to document archives.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to know the historical period in which the production of a presumption of the newer age forms.

Syllabus:

Week #1: The status of Hellenism before the Greek Revolution (1821).

Week #2:  The spiritual regeneration of the (new) Hellenism and the contribution of the Greek communities of Europe.

Week #3: The preparation of the Greek Revolution (1812-1821).

Week #4: The highlights of the Greek Revolution (1821-1828) and the role of the Great Powers.

Week #5: The first Governor of Greece, John Kapodistrias.

Week #6: The period of the Reign and the first Monarch Othon.

Week #7: The creation of the Hellenic "Great Idea". The period of Charilaos Trikoupis.

Week #8: The split of the Ottoman Empire. The creation of the Balkan states. The period of the Balkan Wars.

Week #9: Eleftherios Venizelos and the “National Division”. The Asia Minor Campaign and Disaster.

Week #10: Greece between the two World Wars (interwar).

Week #11:  The “Metaxa dictatorship” and the Second World War.

Week #12: The Civil War and its consequences in Greek society.

Week #13: The "Cyprus Question". The modern Greece of the Republic.
