Short Description:

The Church, as an entity which produces archives, constitutes the oldest institution of the Greek State still in vigor, while it also preexisted it. The archival wealth of the Ecclesiastical Archives is proved by the historical and intellectual activity of the Orthodox Church, combined with the geographical reference territory (the geo-cultural space of the “Hellenic East and of the West” and of the Ecumenical Hellenism of the Diaspora). In the framework of the course, we will examine the archival cartography of the most important repositories of ecclesiastical archives (inactive – historical), as well as the modern ecclesiastical institutions (administrative, pastoral, social welfare etc.) which, in the framework of their activity, produce ecclesiastical documents. So as for the students to become familiar with this particular subject, a number of visits will be conducted to repositories of ecclesiastical archives in the city of Corfu (General State Archives of the Prefecture of Corfu, Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu, Evangelical and Anglican Church of Corfu, Monastery of Platytera etc.), or Ecclesiastical Archives will be examined as well (belonging to churches or to private collections).
