Short Description:

The goal of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the theory and practice of indexing of traditional, electronic and web resources. This course aims at providing students with knowledge regarding indexing languages, controlled vocabularies, classification, taxonomies, knowledge organization and information retrieval in computer-based retrieval systems and the Web.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course students will:

  • Know how to use subject analysis and retrieval tools.
  • Know how to use controlled vocabularies.
  • Know the basic concepts and principles of indexing languages and indexing systems based on pre-coordination and post-cordination.
  • Understand the structure and use of thesauri, subject heading lists and other value vocabularies. Emphasis is given on international guidelines for the construction and the structure of controlled vocabularies and thesauri.
  • Determine the best approaches for subject analysis and access
  • Understand the basic types of indexes and catalogs.
  • Construct subject headings and controlled vocabularies.
  • Understand the differences between natural languages and controlled vocabularies, pre-coordinated and post-coordinated indexing.
  • Use efficiently thesauri and controlled vocabularies.

Week #1: Knowledge Organization. Information Organization. Introduction to Indexing. Aboutness

Week #2: Basic terms and concepts on Indexing. Fundamentals and Principles.

Week #3: Indexing as a process. Types of Indexes. Types of Catalogs. Practice in Class.

Week #4: Controlled vocabularies. Basic Terms and Concepts. Controlled vocabularies-related Issues.

Week #5: Relationships. Grammar. Types of Vocabularies. Subject Headings Lists. 

Week #6: Subject Headings. Basic Terms and Concepts. Form of Subject Headings. Construction of Subject Headings. Guidelines and LC Manuals. Practice in Class.

Week #7: Assignment of Library of Congress Subject Headings. LC Guidelines and Manuals. Practice in Class.

Week #8: LC Subject Headings Subdivisions. Types of Subdivisions. Free Floating Subdivisions. Pattern Headings. LC Guidelines and Manuals. LCSH Structure in MARC 21 Bibliographic and Authority Records. Practice in class.

Week #9: Hierarchies. Relationships. References. Structure. LCSH Guidelines and Manuals. Authority Records and LCSH. Linking Controlled Vocabularies. Practice in Class.

Week #10: Thesauri. Basic Terms and Concepts. LCSH vs Thesauri. Guidelines and Standards. Hierarchies. Relationships. Practice in Class. Thesaurus Software.

Week #11: SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization Scheme). Ontologies. Practice in Class. 

Week #12: Controlled Vocabularies and MARC encoding. LC Authorities File. LC Linked Data Service Authorities and Vocabularies. Practice in Class. Thesaurus Software.

Week #13: Synopsis. The Future in Knowledge Organization.
