Short Description:

The French language and culture’s undergraduate courses ΙI is offered to the students of the Ionian University’s Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology and is focused on the development of reading and listening comprehension skills, French grammatical structures and related vocabulary/terminology. Our aim is to offer courses that meet the students’ needs and learning objectives. As a result, the aforementioned linguistic competence levels are indicative and can be modified according to the students’ needs.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

French II course addresses cultural issues through the study of short stories, literature, music etc. of French-speaking countries and aims at developping speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Information and vocabulary concerning education, family, employment, advertisement, menus, media etc.

Comprehension and producing of short, simple texts, notes and messages, standard letters.

Syllabus:

Week #1: Revision of grammar phenomena approached during the first (A’) term and application on exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #3: Approaching grammar and syntax (adjectives, adverbs, adverbs, position in speech/writing, auxiliary and modal verbs) and application on exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #4: Approaching grammar and syntax (future tense) and application on exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #5: Approaching grammar and syntax (future tense) and application on exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Week #6: Approaching grammar (prepositions) and applying it on related exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #7: Approaching grammar (tense revision and infinitive) and applying it on related exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #8: Approaching grammar (infinitive [continued] and irregular varbs) and applying it on related exercises. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of the theory, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #9: Provision of new graded reading material for pre-intermediate level (level 3), aiming to approach new vocabulary and grammar found in the given material and to help students comprehend written speech. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of text production, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #10: Continue dealing with the aforementioned reading material, aiming to approach new vocabulary and grammar found in the given material and to help students comprehend written speech. Use of audiovisual material, in order to help students familiarize with French speech use (10-minute videos), accompanied by comprehension questions. Weekly assignment for a more practical application of text production, which shall be turned in within a deadline pre-determined by the instructor.

Week #11: Continue dealing with the aforementioned reading material, aiming to approach new vocabulary and grammar found in the given material and to help students comprehend written speech. Teaching Methods:

The course duration is three hours and aims to introduce students to a more systematic use of the French language, in order to be prepared for approaching foreign literature related to their studies in the following years. The use of literary texts which corresponds to students’ level is also suggested, in order to enable their contact with the language’s cultural elements.

Students’ final assessment and grading is carried out through written exams. The students are expected to apply the course’s learning material on exercises of relevant content (text-grammar-vocabulary-text production).
