The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history and theory of museums, museology and studies of cultural material. Emphasis is given on the basic principles of organization and operation of modern museums after a historical retrospection in the operation of museums, different types of museums and their peculiarities.
The course analyzes the theoretical issues of museology that form the basis of the museum practice and the different specialties that contribute to the realization of his work. In order to familiarize participants with key issues of philosophy, theory and history of museums, special issues of museum-collector interaction, collectible practices, as well as common and educational issues are addressed.
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Understand the semantics of museum and museology
- Perceive the institutions and legislation on cultural heritage in Greece
- Realize the museum's function and the prospects of the profession in Greece
