Bibliography: definition and development. Description of the book: typology, development and terminology. Parts of the book. Βook decoration and illustration. Kinds of bibliography. The development of the Greek Bibliography. Citations, referencing systems (Harvard, APA, Vancouver). Using bibliographies and reference works. Different types of information resources.
The student will learn to describe the printed and other material, to use bibliographies and reference works, to understand and use the referencing systems, to be familiar with bibliographical issues.
Week #1: Introduction. What does bibliography mean in a changing world?
Week #2: The structure of the book. Text and paratext. Frontmatter and backmatter. The development of the title-page. Other publications.
Week #3: Describing the material. Terms.
Week #4: Bibliographies and Library catalogues. Book illustration and decoration.
Week #5: Kinds of bibliography. The National Bibliography. Case studies. The role of the National Library.
Week #6: History of bibliography
Week #7: The Greek bibliography: history, development, reference works,
Week #8: Reference systems (Harvard, APA, Vancouver), part I.
Week #9: Reference systems (Harvard, APA, Vancouver), part II.
Week #10: Visit at the Academic Library of the Ionian University. Using reference works.
Week #11: Description of old books.
Week #12: Grey bibliography. Information resources.
Week #13: Case studies. Revision. Discussion.
