Museology Research Lab

The Museology Research Lab of the Ionian University (MRL-IU) was founded as the capstone of the establishment of museology, museum studies and cultural studies in the Ionian University, Corfu, Greece.

Museums, Monuments, Culture, and Exciting Research

Our strategic priorities include openness, collaboration, participation, inclusiveness, extroversion, respect for humanity and nature. The MRL-IU adheres to the directions of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and UNESCO. We aim at establishing productive synergies and collaborations at local, national and international levels with research institutions, universities and cultural organizations and units.

Mission

The Laboratory’s mission is research in the wider spectrum of museology with interdisciplinary approaches, focusing on museums, monuments and heritage assets. MRL-IU conducts research in museology, history of museums, museography, preservation, restoration and employment of cultural assets, museum education, management of museums, monuments and collections, museum ethics, heritage management and interpretation, new and digital technologies in museums, monuments and culture, heritage and museum documentation, heritage-related data science, heritage Big Data, etc.

Activities

The Laboratory’s activities include attending the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology and the Ionian University’s educational needs in the related fields. This includes supporting under- and post- graduate courses, specialised seminars, theses and dissertations supervision, doctoral and post-doc research. Furthermore, the MRL-IU cares for the training and the continuous professional development (CPD) education of students and professionals. The MRL-IU is committed to spreading knowledge and innovation for the benefit of society. To this end, we organise lectures and events, and respond to the research and advisory needs of social, administrative and market entities.
