Short Description:

The appearance of the Press in Europe in the 17th century. Categories, form and content of periodicals in the western world during the pre-industrial era. Press in western societies in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Greek Pre-Revolutionary Press (1784-1821). Newspapers of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1827). Historical overview of the Greek press inside and outside the borders of the Greek state from 1828 to the end of the 20th century.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The course aims to provide students with historical knowledge about the appearance, dissemination and evolution of magazines, journals and newspapers from the 17th to the 20th century. This knowledge is necessary for the management of the large stock of old magazines and newspapers that are in the libraries.

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to know the characteristics of the newspapers, journals and magazines at each stage of their historical development and will be able to evaluate and describe this material with scientific competence.

Syllabus:

Week #1: Prehistory of the press, until the end of the 16th century

Week #2: The first European newspaper (1609). The Press in European Countries in the 17th Century.

Week #3: The first scientific journals in Germany, France, England and Italy

Week #4: Newspapers in Europe and America during the 18th century

Week #5: The magazines in Europe and America during the 18th century

Week #6: The first Greek newspapers in the late 18th century

Week #7: Greek periodicals in the years of the Enlightenment (1811-1821)

Week #8: The Press during the Greek Independence War (1821-1827)

Week #9: Greek newspapers and magazines inside and outside Greece during the first half of the 19th century.

Week #10: The Press in Europe and America in the 19th Century

Week #11: The foundation of big press agencies and their role

Week #12: Greek newspapers and magazines inside and outside Greece in the second half of the 19th century.

Week #13: The evolution of the Press during the 20th century
