Short Description:

Introduction to the electronic publishing and the publication environment that the Internet and the Web create.

General electronic background: concepts of the digital environment, the importance and the difference of the structure and the appearance of the digital content, description and markup languages. Overview of HTML description, representation and formats of digital data, properties of text/html/pdf and also of formats for images, sound, video, etc.

General electronic background: issues on publication in digital media, related Internet and Web protocols.

Standards and issues of electronic publishing: object identifiers, DOI, references to electronic publications, digital signatures, Selective Dissemination of Information.

Electronic books: the organization of their content, the formats of their files, the tools and the e-readers.

Electronic Journals.

Preservation of digital content and preservation metadata (OAIS).

Long term preservation of content on the Web.

The Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and its applications for the harvesting of the published information.

Lab exercise.

Automation of the procedures using the digital technologies, and the evolution of the different roles.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The course Electronic Publishing aims to explain what electronic publishing is and how it has changed the life cycle of the information and procedures in the information science. The students should understand the way that the digital information environment works – in comparison with both the traditional information and that of the Web. They should understand the different needs and the new roles that are formed.

Week #1: Introduction to the electronic publishing and the publication environment that the Internet and the Web create.

Week #2: General electronic background: concepts of the digital environment, the importance and the difference of the structure and the appearance of the digital content, description and markup languages. Overview of HTML description, representation and formats of digital data, properties of text/html/pdf and also of formats for images, sound, video, etc.

Week #3: General electronic background: issues on publication in digital media, related Internet and Web protocols.

Week #4: Standards and issues of electronic publishing: object identifiers, DOI, references to electronic publications, digital signatures, Selective Dissemination of Information.

Week #5: Electronic books: the organization of their content, the formats of their files, the tools and the e-readers.

Week #6: Electronic Journals: basic concepts.

Week #7: Electronic Journals: the academic publications, the publication/review model and the electronic scientific communication.

Week #8: Electronic Journals: open access publication. The case study of BioMed Central.

Week #9: Preservation of digital content and preservation metadata (OAIS).

Week #10: Long term preservation of content on the Web (Internet Archive, Pandora,…).

Week #11: The Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and its applications for the harvesting of the published information.

Week #12: Lab exercise on systems that support electronic publication functionality (conference papers publications, notes, journal publications, …).

Week #13: Automation of the procedures using the digital technologies, and the evolution of the different roles.
