Short Description:

The module presents the evolution of the administrative structures of the Greek State over time. More specifically, the administrative bodies that composed the structures of the central and regional administration as well as the local administration during the 19th and 20th century are examined.  Moreover, the procedures of administrative convergence of the territories annexed to the Greek State after its formation, and the new administrative structures that have been created are described (Ionian Islands, Thessaly, Macedonia, Epirus, islands of the Aegean Sea, Crete, Thrace). The presentation of the structure of the Army and the influences of the war in the organization of the public administration are examined. Finally, human resources management policies, and more specifically, civil servants’ tenure and the phenomenon of administrative purges are examined. Emphasis is given in the terminology connected with the structure of the Greek public administration.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The aims of the module are:

  • The student’s familiarization with knowledge connected with the structure of Greek public administration over time
  • The student’s familiarization with administrative terminology.

After the successful completion of their studies students will be able to know:

  • The main characteristics of the structure of the Greek public administration over time
  • The relative administrative terminology

Week #3: The structure of regional administration

Week #4: The structure of local administration (municipalities, merging of municipalities)

Week #5: Procedures of administrative convergence of the territories annexed to the Greek State after its formation (Ionian Islands, Thessaly)

Week #6: Procedures of administrative convergence of the territories annexed in the Greek State after its formation (Macedonia, Epirus, islands of the Aegean Sea, Crete, Thrace)

Week #7: The structure of the Army (regulations of the Army)

Week #8: The influences of the war in the Administration  (First World War)

Week #9: The influences of the war in the Administration  (Second World War)

Week #10: The tenure of Public Servants

Week #11: The administrative purges

Week #12: The first civil servants Code of the Greek State  (1951)
