Short Description:

Introduction to the digital libraries and overview of the field – including the technological, working, social, economic, etc effects.

General concepts of digital objects: digital representation and storage, digital copying, analytic and structural representation of the information in digital media, the digital content, terminology – document, resource, object, types and media for the digital content.

Definition and importance of Digital Libraries: the digital content today and its importance, what is a Digital Library, differences and similarities between Digital Libraries and the Web, application of Digital Libraries, organizational issues in Digital Libraries.

Components and architecture of a Digital Library, challenges, interoperability, comparison with the traditional library.

Definition and examples of digital objects, functionality and interface.

Examples of media Digital Libraries and overview of important Digital Libraries and the software and technologies in use, and their functionality and capabilities.

The organization and the operation of Digital Libraries: Case study of National Science Digital Library. Case studies of well known Digital Libraries, such as Europeana.

The creation procedure of a Digital Library and the questions to address before the creation, the conditions, the arguments, the design, the first steps and pitfalls, design and implementation, resources needed, future directions and recent achievements.

The evaluation of a Digital Library and automation in the digital world and the Digital Libraries.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Introduction to key concepts, terminology and technologies associated with the design and implementation of digital objects and libraries. The students should understand what a Digital Library is, how much and when it is needed, what could be its content, what functionality it provides, how it is organized and whatever is needed to create, configure and enrich a digital library.

At the end of the course, students should understand the main issues related to the design, development and sustainability of digital libraries, be familiar with the technology used in current projects of digitization and be able to participate in the planning of digital library creation projects.

Syllabus:
