Short Description:

Introduction to Ancient Greek Literature

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The formation of a general view of ancient Greek grammatology from its beginnings to the Hellenistic period. Oral tradition and written speech. Literary genres and their importance.

Syllabus:

Week #1. Introduction to Ancient Greek Literature.

Week #2 - #3: Classic philology and auxiliary sciences, literature and society in antiquity, classic text tradition.

Week #4: Heroic Epic (oral tradition and written texts, and Homeric epics’ structure and composition).

Week #5: Hesiod (his relation to tradition, influences, resources).

Week #6: Lyric poetry (elegies, iambic poetry, melic poetry).

Week #7: Historiography (Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon).

Week #8 - #9: Philosophy and science (Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates).

Week #10 - #11: Rhetoric (Isocrates, Lysias, Demosthenes, Aeschines).

Week #12 - #13: Selected epic texts, lyric poetry, philosophy, rhetoric and historiography
